About me

I'm a Warwickshire based cabinetmaker, designing and building furniture with traditional joinery techniques. My second favourite way to spend time is at my 18th century style 'Roubo bench', sawing dovetails and planing wood by hand; my favourite of course, spending time with my family, especially with my son Ralph.

Background
I grew up in a village in the Warwickshire countryside, the son of Morris dancers and folk singers - it was an interesting childhood. Initially educated in furniture making (city and guilds), I moved into the boat building industry, trained by a variety of skilled craftsmen to build Dutch barges, narrow boats and wide beams.
I also spent a few years training as a bench joiner making traditional oak doors and windows, furniture, and hand made kitchens.
Having learnt the basics of wood construction and gained a developed competence with tooling, I then progressed to dive more deeply into the craft and started my business in 2017.

Interests
With a passion for woodworking, history, philosophy, and geometry,
I enjoy spending time researching my craft and the various cultures that have shaped it.
This has an important effect on my work ethos and how I approach making a piece of furniture.

My biggest influences have been from the arts and crafts movement, particularly the work that flourished in the Cotswolds by Ernest Gimson and the Barnsley brothers;

and also the 'Shakers' in North America, with their simple way of life reflected in the furniture they built.

 Google customer review
"Chris is the best in the business. We have now used him twice, and he has been used multiple times by family and friends, all of whom have found him extremely high quality. He is very quick to understand the concept of the desired design – I normally point out a Pinterest picture and he goes away and comes back with a thoughtful plan. He has great attention to detail, he is incredibly pleasant to deal with, is prompt, good value and his work is of the highest quality. I cannot recommend him highly enough."
